it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Expectations. We all assume that all high school students expect to go to college and that their teachers, parents, friends, and community expect the same. The reality is that these expectations are not the standard at all schools. My students have high expectations for themselves and I want to help
My students are 11th graders taking a college-level Advanced Placement class.
They want to challenge themselves academically and to take advantage of the opportunities that are put before them. Their community is full of negativity - gangs, drugs, violence, and poverty. They have chosen to go down a different path. In May, they will take the Advanced Placement Exam in United States History. Students who pass could get college credit. At the very least, it will give them more experience to help them be successful at the college level. They are truly motivated and brilliant kids who have overcome a lot to get here and I want to support their endeavors as much as possible.
Our school is one of four on one campus. We broke off from another large school where we had a lot of success because we had the opportunity to build a school run by teachers and focused on students. My students chose to join us at this new school for their last two years of high school.
My Project
When I took history in college, the class was broken up into parts. I took one class on everything up to and including the Civil War and another class on everything after. The tests I took were only on the material for that class. My students are going to test on the whole thing. That's pretty challenging.
The exam that my students will take in May is pretty rigorous. The exam includes an 80-question multiple choice section that they have 55 minutes to complete and they have another 130 minutes to write three essays. Its pretty tough.
These books have a lot of resources to help my students with the exam - a section that briefly reviews the material, sample questions, and strategies to help them pass. Since the test is based on the entire year, the books will go a long way to help them review the incredible amount of material that we cover.
We are all aware of the financial challenges facing our schools.
These challenges are nothing new to my students. I would love to be able to give them this resource in order to help them have success in the future. By donating to this project you are not only helping a student to do well this year, but having an impact on their long-term success. Please help where our tax dollars are falling short.
