Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Wash your clothes! Do the ironing! For most people these are chores we'd rather not do. But for my students, they are not only chores they need to do, but chores that must be taught and reinforced daily.
The ASD STEPS class is made up of 12 wonderful, unique, and amazing young men.
Our class currently has 12 young men ages 19-22 with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Our curriculum focuses on the four key parts; Leisure and Recreation Skills, Personal and Social Skills, Vocational and Employment Training, and Independent Living Skills.
My Project
This year our principal has given us a separate classroom in which to teach Daily Living Skills. The intent of the classroom is to teach the students which chores are to be done in different areas of the home. We hope to simulate a kitchen, laundry room, and living room. Each area would include task for the students to learn and master that would enable them to learn the necessary skills for independent living. My students need aprons, an ironing board, an iron, ink and a paper shredder to furnish the ASD Daily Living Skills Classroom.
My students are really amazing!
Despite the challenges they face on a daily basis, they never complain. Their enthusiasm and dedication never ceases to amaze me and I am inspired daily by them!
