S.T.E.P.ping into the Kitchen

Help me give my students basic cooking equipment to continue their learning of nutrition, food safety, and cooking skills. All the supplies requested either help maintain our garden or help assist with teaching how to cook.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is and always has been a room for personal growth. I currently teach students in the S.T.E.P.S. program. These students are from the ages of 18-22. They have chosen to return to school in order to learn life skills needed for adulthood. Career preparation, community-based instruction, daily living skills, social/emotional skills, communication skills, etc. are all courses that I teach. Everyone in my classroom has Autism Spectrum Disorder. A few have multiple disorders/diagnosis. The setting is a self-contained class, so I see many of the students for the majority of the day. I have had the privilege to work with my students since they were in elementary! I have moved along with them and have been able to witness their academic and personal growths.

My Project

This project is a little different than the reoccurring projects we have had. The items requested for this project have two purposes. A few items are to help maintain our growing season in our garden for the current and upcoming school year. The rest of the supplies are for learning how to cook. Cooking is a basic living skill that all students should know how to do. Any produce we grow in the garden, we use to teach. The students follow recipes and make meals for each other. Cooking not only teaches a life skill, but it allows for social and communication skills to foster. The students work together, speak to one another and are able to engage in a multi-sensory lesson.
