Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are 18-22 years old, come from diverse backgrounds, and have autism and/or intellectual disabilities. They are amazing, thoughtful, and determined. I am inspired by them everyday and they motivate me to do my best.
You may be wondering what makes my students so special.
To begin with they are the most generous and kind students you will ever meet. They are always eager to lend a hand and contribute to the greater good. They have a "never give up" mindset. Despite obstacles and setbacks, they just keep on trying until they achieve their goal!
Students with Autism have a difficult time finding and maintaining employment when after completing high school. Vocational and employabilty skills are taught in the classroom and the community. Vocational skills are taught through hands on projects both in and out of the classroom.
My Project
My students recently began a recycling program within the school. We have twenty six teachers who have agreed to have a recycling box in their room for paper collection. Once a week my students go to each room and collect the paper. They then sort the paper and prepare it for shredding. We then begin the paper making process. We currently have basic supplies to make recycled paper. In order to expand our operation we would love additional resources to make the process more efficient. In addition to making an impact on the environment, this project teaches my students basic business and organizational skills as well.
