This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Are you a couch potato? Let's reduce the number of children that are on their way to being part of that unhealthy crop! Everyone is aware of the rising number of health related problems in our youth due to being overweight. I teach fourth grade and I am departmentalized. I teach reading, science and physical education to two classes. I love teaching these subjects and feel fortunate that I am in shape and love to exercise. Unfortunately, I am amazed at the number of my students that are already overweight and don't like to exercise. I feel that it is very important to start with exercise early and to have our students hooked on it so that they will be healthier teenagers and ultimately, healthier adults.

The students at my school are coming from families that don't always value nutrition and exercise. Sixty-two percent of our student population is on free or reduced lunch. Our school incorporated a Smart Bodies program last year and I know that the students are now more aware of eating healthy and how exercise benefits them. I want to expand on that focus and get them on the "right track" for exercise.

You can help me in this endeavor. I would love to have the AccuSTEP Activity Wellness Program and enough pedometers for my students. Pedometers are an excellent way to motivate my students to be active. This program will be a fun and easy way to get my students moving. I have already been on-line looking for lessons incorporating pedometers and am amazed at the number I was able to find. Walking is fun and relatively easy. It makes you feel good and is good for your mental and physical health. Students will be able to incorporate many math skills by keeping track of their steps and friendly competition between students will be rewarding for all.

Please help me to help my students recognize the importance of beginning a healthier lifestyle at their age. Just imagine what a difference it can make in today's youth and for their future!
