This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
You may be wondering what makes my students so special. To begin with, they are the most generous and kind students you will ever meet. They are always eager to lend a hand and contribute to the greater good. They have a "never give up" mindset. Despite obstacles and setbacks, they just keep on trying until they achieve their goal!
My students are 18-22 years old, come from diverse backgrounds, and have autism and intellectual disabilities.
They are amazing, thoughtful, and determined. I am inspired by them every day, and they motivate me to do my best.
My Project
This past year has been a challenge to say the least. The purpose of my program is two-fold; to teach my students life skills through a combination of in class simulations and real world experiences in their natural environment, and to train them for employment when they transition from the school system.
Providing students with real world experiences is the focus of the STEPS Program.
My classroom instruction is divided into to five categories; Office and Business, Recycling, Home Maintenance, Career and Employment, and Daily Living. The materials listed in the project will help enhance their experiences in the classroom as we transition back into school.
Many of my students have been out of the classroom for 15 months and will need to re-learn and experience the skills necessary for success in their post school transition.
