Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 2nd grade bilingual teacher serving a high need community in a school with very dedicated teachers. The community is a predominantly working class neighborhood.
I teach quite an enthusiastic group of English language learners who love to read. Unfortunately, their passion for reading often supersedes their reading ability. At this time, my library is not sufficient to meet their needs. The class library does not contain the appropriate materials needed to serve their varied reading levels. Additionally, the children are beginning to develop varied interests in books which our library cannot meet.
I have become increasingly frustrated with telling my students they can only choose books from a certain basket. Too often I am asked, “Why can’t I read the fun books?” I do not want to stifle their development and interest in reading, but I want to make sure that they are reading appropriately for their level and not just enjoying pictures when developing phonemic awareness is also important.
The solution to my problem is simple; provide the students with an abundance of book options at their level. With this in mind, I have chosen book sets that will allow my young readers to simultaneously learn and have fun while reading. The Step Into Reading Sets allow for quick leveling. Also, the students enjoy the pictures and book covers as well as the story line. I have also included sets of Ready Freddy, which my boys seem to be particularly fond of. Lastly, I have chosen Picture Ready books for my emergent readers since most are new to the country.
Reading is definitely fundamental, and my children look forward to our reading time every day. Please help me stop denying my young students the joy of reading. Provide them the opportunity to Step Into Reading!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
