Step Inside the Story: Learning and Reading in Our Igloo

Help me give my students a reading igloo to enjoy buddy reading during our winter festival and beyond.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This winter, our students will have the opportunity to step into a magical, life-sized igloo, a space designed to spark imagination, deepen engagement, and bring learning to life. We are requesting a life-size igloo structure that will be used during our school’s Winter Festival as a special “Buddy Reading Igloo,” where students in younger and older grades can come together to read, explore stories, and build positive literacy habits through hands-on, interactive experiences.

However, the learning will extend far beyond one event.

The igloo will become an ongoing student-centered learning space that supports inquiry, collaboration, and experiential exploration throughout the school year. Inside the igloo, students won’t just read; they will role-play story scenes, participate in mini inquiry-based research projects, explore winter-themed STEM challenges, and engage in project-based learning connected to science and social studies.

Students will be invited to ask questions like: How are igloos built? Why are they warm inside? How do communities in cold climates adapt to their environment? These questions naturally lead to hands-on experiments with insulation, engineering models, and real-world problem solving. The igloo becomes both a reading nook and a living “lab” where students test ideas, collaborate with classmates, and build understanding through direct experience.

The space also supports interactive learning. Whether students are buddy reading, acting out a story, conducting a simple science experiment, or using the igloo as a calm, cozy breakout space, they take ownership of their learning environment. This encourages independence, joy, and curiosity, especially important in a Title I community where access to immersive educational experiences may be limited.

By bringing this life-size igloo to our school, students will have a unique, engaging, and magical space that fosters literacy, exploration, creativity, and hands-on learning.
