This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a culturally diverse neighborhood in Florida. Many of the students at our school come from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Honduras, Columbia, and Mexico. More than 90 percent of students that attend our school qualify for free and reduced lunches. Many come from monolingual homes where both parents work to support their family. Some students take care of younger siblings after school while their parents work. For these students, education is their family's top priority and a way to break the cycle of poverty.

My Project

My budding engineers love our dedicated STEM blocks and excitedly look forward to them each week. During these blocks, engineers are faced with solving real world problems. They brainstorm, draw blue prints, plan their build, collect materials, and construct. The only limit to their designs are their imagination and our resources.

Imagine being able to grab a bin of building supplies and create a 3D model of your design.

We currently use recycled materials like cereal boxes, tin foil, popsicle sticks, and pipe cleaners. STEM building materials would allow students to choose the best materials to create a sturdy 3D model that can move.

Students can use the solar robots to design machines that can help us in our everyday lives and operate on solar energy. The straw building kit can be used to design buildings and bridges that push the limits of gravity. Some kits contain wheels that the students can use to design vehicles to carry heavy loads or travel longer distances using less fuel. The possibilities are endless!
