Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a 6th year teacher working on my first year trying flexible seating. I teach at a low-income/Title I school district, and my students face several challenges both in and out of the classroom. This year we were struck by Hurricane Harvey and our school was really not damaged, but the homes of many of my students were.

Despite the hardships they have faced, they are resilient and spirited learners making their way back.

They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able personally to solve the many challenges they face outside of school, however, I can certainly make a powerful impact on the eight hours they spend here at school every day.

My Project

I recently created an after-school club for the kids at my elementary school. In this club, I teach them how to build their own computer from scratch as a potential future career or a fun, money-saving hobby. Our school district is an Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) school district and we have a heavy focus on college and career readiness. I want to expose students to this field as an excellent potential career.

We require the motherboard, processor, ram, power supply, case, and hard drives in order to complete this computer.

This club has been very successful so far, but I have been using my own computer to show them. It would be wonderful to show the students what a high quality, new computer can do when it is all done and the kids love building and figuring out how everything goes together. Just last week we actually were commissioned to build a new computer for a fellow teacher and it was so great seeing them teach her how to build it without my assistance.

I would like to make a new computer and give it to one of the students to take home and use to further their education after.
