Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Kindergarten without valuable learning experiences is difficult when you lack hands-on learning activities.
My kindergarten students lack the necessary resources that will set them up for academic success.
Their background experiences are limited to what they can see on the television. This does not prepare them for what they need to know in science and math because the focus on STEM will not going away. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Math.
They come into school every day eager to learn something new. We are a Title I school with close to 600 students. The majority of my students are English Language Learners who need additional materials to support learning new vocabulary and skills simultaneously.
Many people have said that our school is a hidden treasure, and for that reason it can be difficult to locate. Because we are tucked into a small neighborhood, we do not receive much community support to fund classroom needs. Many of our teachers purchase materials independently or seek funding for materials.
My Project
My students will use the science learning stations as small group, partner, and individual activities as appropriate. Vocabulary development is a critical need in science and math so using the materials in a small group will support all of my students' learning goals of using vocabulary appropriately.
In partnerships, they will learn how to take turns while building words with the magnetic letters. The words will center around our science topics discussed in our small group and partner work.
Individually, the students will be able to practice and show what they know. As I work with the students, I will be listening for their vocabulary development as it pertains to the learning tasks and the specific standard or standards. As I ask probing questions, I am looking for their understanding and application or explanation of what they know.
Thank you for your support for my project.
It means a lot to me because I know how important it is for my students to receive these science learning centers. Your donation gives them all of these learning experiences
