STEM: Watch us Grow with Science, Technology, and Math
My students need STEM Science and Math Kits to explore concepts with hands on activities & experiments and a laptop computer to record data and watch educational videos.

My Students
My 2nd Graders are like little sponges, absorbing all the knowledge they can throughout the day. Our school is pushing the STEM movement this year and I want to give them EVERY advantage they can get to become successful in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics.
This year I am blessed with 12 young ladies and 12 young gentlemen.
They are typical seven year olds who still believe in superheroes and princesses, but are questioning the existence of Santa and the Tooth Fairy. Our school serves mostly African American students in a low socio-economic community. I've heard my students say, "My Daddy got paid, now we have lights on again." and "My Mom made me sleep on the floor last night because there was too much shooting.". Even with unimaginable conditions outside of school, they come to me each day ready to learn and give 100%. Our classroom is a community where everyone has a class job, we say nice things to each other, and they are free from put-downs. I get inspired by them and nothing gets me more excited than to see them succeed and learn. The bonus is, I learn just as much from them as they learn from me.
My Project
I have twenty-four 2nd Grade students in my class this year, testing anywhere between Kindergarten and the 4th Grade. Not only do students learn at different rates, they learn through different teaching styles. With the science and math kits, I will be able to let my students explore science by conducting experiments and excel in math with hands on activities. By using the science kits, they will learn the process of inquiry, making predictions, conducting experiments, and recording actual data. With our math stations, students will be able to practice the skills they learned during lectures and evaluate their own learning. With use of the laptop, students can watch educational videos on Science and Math concepts taught in the classroom and record/share data with the use of technology. Technology is something most of my students do not have access to at home.
The science kits, math kits, and laptop computer will give my students access to materials they wouldn't normally be provided with in the classroom.
I am hoping to inspire future scientists and mathematicians by getting them excited about learning. In a community where one of eight boys graduates from high school, these materials could make a HUGE difference. I want to instill a desire to learn and have my students become excited about learning. I want them to stay in school until graduation.
