S.T.E.M. Unit: Mini Cities

My Students

My students love projects and they love challenges. When I introduced our "MINI CITY" challenge coming up this December for Unit 3, they were so excited!

Our six week STEM Unit will be building tiny cities; there will be 24 groups of students building 24 different tiny cities!

My students come from a variety of backgrounds; that's what makes our school so special. The students are homeschooled part of the week and attend classes the other part. Each student has a different reason for choosing this type of educational system; all of the students, however, are very unique!

I have 90 minutes each week to teach them their required Science. Due to our unique academic program and the grade level in which I teach; I focus a great deal on project-based learning.

My Project

For this project I will be: utilizing Parent Volunteers to help with the research (historical) portion of the project, I have asked an Electrical Engineer from the community to come teach our students basic concepts, and I will be asking families to bring in recycled paper/plastic products for our base model materials.

Each Mini City will have: one water component, one electrical component, one historical landmark, and be made out of recycled materials.

Each student within the group will be assigned a role as an: architect, an engineer, and/or a historian. We will also be diving into: city management, renewable resources, and where the city water is coming from.
