How can we learn about rockets without any rockets? Sure, we could read a book, label a diagram, or even watch a video; but how do you really ignite a student's passion for science, engineering, math and tech? With a "hands-on, real-life, light-the-ignition-and-watch-it-soar-into-the-sky" rocket.
We need experiences like these to help bring our school community together.
My students attend an urban, public school district where 60% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. There are three sixth grade classes at our school, and each one is run by a different program with differing philosophies and composition of students. It is difficult to find activities that all three can participate in together. We have been working hard on creating a sense of community. Can you imagine the talk in the school as all three programs are building their rockets and the excitement as they get ready for launch day?
My Project
We just adopted the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) core curriculum, and I need equipment for my students to investigate weather, matter and energy transfer through ecosystems, particle theory, and space. We need hotplates, temperature probes, and scales to help us measure things like density and properties of matter. We can recreate mini-weather situations in our classroom and make observations.
I am asking for magnifying glasses to look at ecosystems and details on the backs of leaves or bugs, it will give us a closer perspective; binoculars to look at lake and mountain features give us a far away perspective of ecosystems on a larger scale; molecule models will help us investigate things we cannot see, and of course, rockets will ignite their interest in STEM.
There is nothing better than presenting a phenomenon to my students and letting them loose to figure it out through hands-on investigations.
