My Students
Students investigate Earth and space science topics by utilizing STEM approaches, AVID instructional strategies (i.e. interactive notebook), and project-based learning. My students will be taking their state assessment in science that covers 6th, 7th, and 8th grade and it is my goal to prepare them.
My students have diverse cultural backgrounds, a wide range of learning abilities and motivation.
They are social and visual learners. Our school has a student population of 1,150 including 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Ethnic backgrounds include--but do not limit--Hawaii, Filipino, Mexican, Tongan, Samoan, and Caucasion. I have students with Special Education Needs (SPED), English Language Learners (ELL), and Individuals with Disability Act (IDEA). I do not have any aids in the classroom. I have 25 laptops to utilize with my students where we use eScience 3000, an instructional tool used to help differentiate reading in science.
My Project
My students will use the materials to compose their interactive notebooks, which will act as an ongoing portfolio to house all of their work. This will help students to reflect on their learning, organize their comprehension skills by using Cornell notes, and develop studying skills--which many lack. My students are heavy in kinesthetic and visual learning so the construction paper will help them to create and construct their learning. Depths of Knowledge (DOK) will guide students to learn key concepts and construct their own understanding on our state standards and common core in order to prepare them for college and career readiness.
By having these supplies, my students will construct an engaging and creative interactive notebook by using their construction paper, card stock for foldable activities, markers to add color creatively, and the glue to hold it all in.
My presentation controller will allow me to lead the discussion while moving around our small and confining classroom to monitor and engage student conversation. My students will build confidence in learning science by creating a notebook they are proud to show.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
