STEM Superstars: Racial Justice Through Diverse Innovation

Help me give my students diverse STEM role model books, engineering kits, and collaborative workspace furniture for inclusive hands-on learning.

My Project

What I love most about my students is their incredible resilience and untapped potential. Our rural Title I school serves a diverse population of Latino, Black, and white students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who arrive daily with genuine hunger for knowledge despite significant challenges. They possess natural problem-solving abilities from real-life experiences - fixing farm equipment, maintaining vehicles, and creatively repurposing materials - yet many have never seen engineers or scientists who look like them.

The STEM Superstars book set will be transformational, showcasing twelve diverse STEM professionals who overcame similar obstacles.

When students see scientists and engineers sharing their backgrounds, it fundamentally changes their perception of who belongs in STEM. The counter-height stool and the professional Alera Fixed Arm Leather Task Chair creates professional collaborative workspaces where students work as equals while connecting to diverse role models. Bridge-building sets, programmable robots, and circuit kits provide hands-on experiences that validate their existing knowledge while introducing new concepts through tactile learning.

My goals include increasing STEM course enrollment by 25% over two years and creating a sustainable pipeline of diverse students entering STEM fields. What makes these students special is their collaborative spirit rooted in rural community values, their status as future first-generation college students who approach problems without limiting preconceptions, and their unique perspectives on resource scarcity that STEM fields need to solve global challenges - they're future innovators who will address problems that matter to rural America while inspiring the next generation.
