This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is very active. The students are always actively engaged in their learning and having fun at the same time! I am a big believer in students taking ownership of the lesson by always questioning and using hands-on inquiry exploration.
My students are wonderful!
They are natural scientists - inquisitive, questioning, constantly searching for answers to nearly everything! They are also 94% Economically Disadvantaged, 80% Hispanic, and 11% African-American. Most of my students do not have internet access or computers at home, so the only technological access they have is at school. Because they have such a huge deficit with their experience with technology, I feel like it is my duty to bring technology to them in order to "level the playing field." Without access to 21st century technology, my students will enter college with a deficit of knowledge compared to their more affluent peers. I may not be able to control their experiences outside in the real world, but one thing I can control is the education they receive within the four walls of my classroom, of which my students deserve the very best.
My Project
In their journey toward college, I want my students to realize that their dreams are valid and valued. A 3D printer is not only a practical engineering tool which teaches students how to design items through computer programming, but it also allows them to use their creativity in their designs and exposes them to a new vision of what professions and opportunities are out there as they travel down the pathway to college. Students will be able to use the 3D printer to create models, inventions, and pieces of artwork. The possibilities are endless.
My goal as a science teacher in a Title I school is to get my students excited about school so they don't look forward to dropping out and continue the cycle of poverty in which they currently live.
I want my students to visualize themselves attending college and being able to do anything they want with their lives. Students' use of 3D printer their classroom will not only enhance their technological literacy, but it will also prompt those much needed discussion about college and their future.
