Why (II)? Because it's the two of us joining forces. Our students are eager, curious, and energetic young adults in a critical moment of their lives, thriving to learn, grow, and excel. They are deprived of the necessary tools and technologies that are essential to success in this 21st technology-rich century. We can help them in their journeys by providing the basic tools required to succeed and help expand their minds and vision.
Ms. S and Ms. G are science and English teachers, respectively, in KPCS with a focus on project-based learning.
We aim to foster both academic excellence and skill set development. Our school has grown from the back of an industrial park to a brand new building suited for learning, all through the efforts and support of the community and individuals who genuinely believe in and care for our youth. Our school is equipped with tech labs and other amenities in our engineering labs. We’re still missing computers for the students (to even share) in core classes. We are determined to do what we can to change that picture for those less fortunate to have their computer to bring to class.
My Project
In an era with smart-connected gadgets and devices, from our phones and TVs to coffee makers and cars, have significantly improved our living standards and learning capabilities, it is no longer viable to continue the traditional teaching methods, or to expect our students to use grease pens, papers, and whiteboards to take notes, learn the lessons, or communicate. Computers and the Internet have all but retired the importance of becoming “book-smart” for our youth. Students now need to learn how to problem-solve and communicate effectively, using these tools and the vast sea of information at their disposal. We can no longer neglect upgrading our teaching methods or our classroom technologies.
In the 21st century, it matters not if a student chooses a college, a military, or any other career, as, in all, the most important skills are effective communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
Classroom-guided use of computers greatly enhances all of these skills. Whether writing an argumentative essay, creating a blog, writing an email or short story, completing virtual labs, or learning to collect scientific data and completing online assignments, students need computers and related skills to learn, and ultimately, to compete effectively in today’s economy.
In short, it is no longer sufficient to attempt to teach English or Chemistry as subjects before teaching students how to learn and enhance critical thinking through daily use of computers and the related technologies.
