My Students

Over 900 students come through the doors of the digital technology lab in our school each week, excited and ready to get their hands on age appropriate technology such as iPads, laptops, or robots. Each one of these Young Fives through Second Grade students come into a learning environment that is highly engaging and exciting for them. They get so excited when they see what they will be 'playing' with when they walk into the room, but little do they know they are actually building a strong foundation for science, math, technology, and engineering skills. This class is designed to build critical thinking skills and it allows students to think outside the box and learn with their hands.

In today’s society, it is important that our students become strong critical thinkers and problem solvers in math and science with the use of technology and hands-on learning materials.

We have begun engaging students with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities in this special class, and hope to offer the students more hands-on opportunities since that seems to be how these young learners learn best.

My Project

Our school is committed to creating a learning environment that is highly engaging and exciting for over 900 students in Young Fives through second grade. This project would fund age-appropriate STEM materials for students to use when the visit the "Digital Linking Lab" once a week, and open their eyes to the world of coding, building, and physical science concepts.

When young students get things like blocks, magnets, and building bricks in their hands, they use not only their imagination, but build critical thinking skills as well.

When students work on STEM skills, they have to build, revise, and retry their work if their original plan fails. Kids think they are just playing when they are actually creating, running, debugging, and finding solutions to problems that arise.

With this project, students will have access to age-appropriate STEM manipulatives such as the Bloxels. The Bloxels allow students to design and build a video game with blocks, and transfer their ideas onto an iPad to see their game come to life! This project will also fund other hands-on manipulatives that will allow students to explore how to successfully build things such as mazes, bridges, ramps, and cars. I cannot wait to see the excitement on the faces of my students as they create, explore, and learn with these hands-on materials!
