This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students belong to a universal transitional kindergarten program in which students begin school at four years of age. Because many of them have never been in school before, they have had limited exposure to science experiments and non-fiction science books. My challenge is to expose them to as much STEM science learning as possible.
Living in an inner-city infested with crime and poverty is the reality my students face on a daily basis.
They attend an urban public elementary school in which all of its students participate in a federally funded free-lunch program. Most of my students are second language learners and many have parents with no or very limited English language skills. They are from low economic backgrounds, but are hard-working, inquisitive learners. My students are captivated by hands-on learning activities. They enjoy participating in class discussions. The STEM science learning stations I am requesting will ignite their curiosity, elicit questions, as well as stimulate class discussions and wonderings. The non-fiction science books will foster creative thinkers and problem solvers. My goals for these hands-on science materials are to engage students, as well as create thought-provoking classroom conversations and discoveries that can shared with students' families. I hope to provide the time, space, and materials my students need to experiment with the world around them.
