STEM-sational Learning Part 2

My Students

Play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning. They have to play with what they know to be true in order to find out more, and then they can use what they learn in new forms of play," said Fred Rogers. My students need materials to make their learning more effective.

My all-day kindergarten class is comprised of 22 students.

My students are energetic and eager learners who look forward, each day, to working in the different learning stations in our classroom. Research shows that rather than delivering education, we are most likely to help children by PROVIDING experiences known to benefit young children. We are an upper, middle income school facing huge state budget cuts.

My Project

My students need Tree House and Bridge Building Engineering Center kits along with the Design & Build Engineering Center kit, and Rover and Magnetic Gears so that rather than “delivering” education, I can help my students by “providing” experiences known to benefit young learners.

The STEM engineering center kits will provide my students with rich tasks - tasks that students will be engaged in and that has a problem for them to solve.

These STEM engineering kits provide illustrated activity cards that will allow my students to start discovering on their own - naturally solving problems as they play and explore. The kits also provide discussion questions so that I can easily guide my students along as they learn about STEM concepts. Not only will the STEM kits and gear sets be used during the school day but will also be utilized during our family math and science nights. The family math and science night will hopefully generate excitement for STEM by allowing students and their families to explore STEM together.

Research shows that the earlier we guide and support children's wonder about the world--and thereby identify opportunities for children to acquire foundation STEM skills--the more successful they are in all areas of learning later on
