STEM Reading Opportunities for English Language Learners!
My students need reading opportunities in STEM! Did you know reading 15 minutes per day can produce substantial gains in reading achievement; students who read over 30 see the most growth!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach STEM and AVID, a college readiness program, to a fantastic group of enthusiastic scholars in Northern California.
My scholars love learning about the world around them and are innovative in ways to improve it.
We work mainly in discussion/socratic form and collaboration to critically think about the content while applying it to their own lives and problem solving where needed. Last year, we ended our year with a research project on human impact on our environment and they even identified sources of waste right here in our classroom! My inaugural DonorsChoose.Org campaign was to implement the changes they suggested, starting with replacing the many easel pads at our group stations with white boards; this will reduce our class paper waste by ~30 easel-pad-sized papers per week! I can't wait to see what they come up with next :)
My Project
Most of our work in class is discussion based, so I would like to increase opportunities for reading in class. My students read for ELA, but providing additionally opportunities in Math and Science can allow huge gains in language for all students, especially English Language Learners.
Studies show that students who read for 15 minutes per day have substantial improvement in their linguistic abilities, these results only compound when they read for longer periods of time!
These Scholastic magazines will provide excellent opportunities for extra reading practice in a fun way! I remember reading these when I was in school and they were so fun and interesting... these materials always help in motivating our students to have a love of learning and reading, in all subject areas :)
