This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.” – Roald Dahl
My students are intelligent, kind, passionate and creative thinkers in South Central Los Angeles, where a majority of students receive free or reduced lunch.
They are constantly thinking outside the box when it comes to their learning and they can often be found encouraging each other and helping classmates.
Oftentimes, my students have trauma affecting them and their learning from the moment they step into the classroom in the morning. They deserve to read relatable and engaging books during the school year.
My Project
This set of books will directly influence my students' passion for reading and learning. Reading a relevant chapter book like Bud, Not Buddy, that draws them in and hooks them is priceless. Reading is considered cool and the "in" thing to do in my classroom. I read to them, we read as a classroom community, they read in pairs or independently. Many of them (if not all) love to read in our classroom library.
The effects of reading one good book will stay with them for the rest of their lives and hopefully, turn them into lifelong readers.
This set of books will encourage them to look at their own characteristics and how they can be the best version of themselves. Reading a relevant and engaging chapter book will not only encourage their learning, but it will turn them into lifelong learners.
