This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our daily routine begins with, “Good morning my wonderful out-of-this-world class!” My students excitedly reply, “Good morning, Mrs. Wonderful Garibay!” I then ask, “How are my superdiduperdi smarty-pants scholars doing this morning?” They say, “I’m feeling amazing because I came to school learn!

I have 25 AMAZING inquisitive first graders who I try to provide an oasis and safe haven amidst one of the highest crime ridden neighborhoods in the heart of South Los Angeles.

Our school is only 3 miles away from where the 1991 Los Angeles Riots reached its worst apex. My students are challenged with economic hardships and poor family structures, yet it does not deter their hopes and dreams for a brighter future. They attend school everyday with an unwavering curiosity and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. My students are like little sponges. They absorb all the academic information that is provided to them and are EAGER to know more. They enjoy hands on experiences, exploring through the integrated math--language arts-science lessons I develop, but many times I am not able to fully provide them the tools they need because the tools at hand do not lend themselves to a greater learning encounter.

My Project

My first grade little scholars think and see themselves as authors, linguists, mathematicians, historians, engineers, architects, and scientists. Although their love for a certain discipline is ever evolving every day, their love for learning is constant and increases every time they can connect with a subject or lesson. With the Real-World and Fairy Tales STEM Kits, my scholars will plan, build, test, and improve their design for a working parachute, a leak-proof roof and floating roof. They will design an indestructible house for The Three Little Pigs. They will build a bridge that keeps the Billy Goat safe from the Troll. And they will problem solve ways to design a chair, Goldilocks can not break! My little scholars will have fun while learning!!! These resource will assist in building students who are innovators, inventors, and logical thinkers collaborating to get new information. They will persevere through challenging situations to meet our 21st Century Career ready skills.

How can I continue to increase this thirst for knowledge when I have limited supplies!?

That is my daily struggle! The resources that I purposely chose will magnify and foster a love for continued learning, creativity, and exploration. These oh-so-very-exciting resources will inspire and encourage students to pursue careers in STEM. Its never too young to know what you want to be when you grow up. Please help me give my little scholars a springboard to their ultimate dream job! Thank you!
