STEM on Every Level

Help me give my students 10 robot dogs and other STEM materials that will help introduce them to giving commands. This will help them understand the world of coding on their level.

My Students

I teach the STEM Lab at an elementary school in SC. The entire school population comes to the STEM Lab. I teach grades 5k - 6th grade. This includes the general education population as well as our population of students on the Autism Spectrum. With this specific project I am in need of more materials to meet the needs of my students on the Autism Spectrum.

My Project

“STEM on EVERY Level” is a project designed to help supply our new STEM Lab with resources and materials to help our students on the autism spectrum.

Here at our elementary school, we have an autism program that makes up a third of our student population.

These students will need different types of resources and materials to help them better gain the skills that STEM Lab is intended to build.

Robots – Our physical world can seem messy and unpredictable to children on the autism spectrum. Robots on the other hand can have highly patterned and predictable behavior which seems to be soothing to them. By interacting with each individual in a way that works best for them, robots can make connections and then gently help connect the individual to the rest of the world. Robots will also help students with their sensory needs by helping them engage with movement and sound. Robots help teach children on the autism about STEM subjects, but they can also enable teachers and assistants to engage with certain children in new ways such as helping strengthen their communication skills. These specific robots have simple programming which will work on each student’s level. This will allow students to be introduced to coding on their level.

Building - Engineering is one of the key components in STEM. Students on the autism spectrum learn best when working with hands on materials. They will be successful using the building manipulatives: Squigz Toobz, Tracks Snaps and construction toys.
