Do you remember asking you teacher, "Why do I have to learn this?" The new Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) that we are beginning to use in our curriculum show students why science, math and technology are so important.
My students are in 6th, 7th and 8th grade in a Midwest middle school.
They come from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds. This makes it difficult to make real-world connections with every student. Also, many students lost interest in school after a tornado destroyed a third of our city 2 years ago.
My Project
I want to start an after school science club were I can actively engage students in science and engineering practices and apply concepts to deepen their understanding of the NEXT Generation Science Standards we are teaching. This club would be enrichment to what is already being taught in the classroom. I have chosen supplies that align with STEM so that students see the real world applications and are exposed to career possibilities in science, math, engineering and technology. I have chosen Mythbuster's Forces of Flight kit, Power of Air Pressure kit and Weird World of Water kit. I also chose a Science Olympiad kit and Real-Life Science Mysteries book.
The science club I am wanting to start will not be possible without the materials I have requested.
My school does not have the money to fund this project. I know there are many students who are interested in attending and many who need the additional exposure to these concepts to fully understand them.
