My Students
My amazing middle school students are smart, creative, spontaneous, and full of a love of learning! They come to school each day with lots of questions about the world around them. Whether working on math problems or conducting science experiments, my students love to learn by doing.
Our school serves many military families from the nearby Air Force base, a Navy EOD school, and an Army Special Forces cantonment.
We are in a unique area to have military families from so many different branches of service. Because of the challenges of military life, my students are resilient and hard-working.
My Project
Inspired by the winning IF/THEN project "3D Printer Needed for Community Service Project," I want my students to create projects using the 3D printers. Videos and other resources from the IF/THEN collection will be used to showcase women and girls who are forerunners and leaders in their fields. Students will view "Mission Unstoppable: Teen 3D Prints Prosthetic Limb for Veteran" to discover how 3D printing can be used to solve problems. Then they will hear Karina explain how 3D printing works in "Demystifying 3D Printing." They will also hear how Sydney Hamilton designs 3D-printed satellite parts.
With the 3D printers, students can create activities that take academic concepts from the theoretical to the practical.
For example, in our Physical Science classes, students can print fins for their bottle rockets. They can experiment with different fin designs to see how the shape affects the height of the rocket.
The 3D printers in our school's Maker Space are always humming, but keeping our students in 3D printing supplies, like PLA filament, can be a challenge! Your support of this project will cultivate innovation and give students the confidence to pursue more STEM fields in their future!
