Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Although many of my students were eager to lead this project, Mark, Daniel, Jonathan and Simarpal have been selected to lead and represent the student body. Our Goal: To increase the amount of science equipment so that we can better achieve STEM standards and be college and career ready!

After our first project was funded, my students were overwhelmed with excitement. They were shocked to know that individual donors took an interest in their education and provided them with such amazing science equipment! I encouraged students to take an active role in generating their own grant proposal on DonorsChoose.org so that we could possibly receive durable bookcases to store science books and encyclopedias for our STEM research and exploration.

The bookcases will be used for storing our science books and setting up a more hands-on student library. Having this project fully funded would enrich my students' learning experience and better enable them to explore science topics through literature and informational texts. It is very important that my students have greater access to books, especially in science. This will not only enable them to build upon their conceptual understanding in science but also their research skills. In an era where college and career readiness is a prominent factor in the teaching and learning process, STEM education is becoming more and more important. I know that my students will achieve greater learning outcomes, given access to resources that will encourage them to think deeply about studying health and life science concepts.

In Their Own Words

We want to increase the amount of science and technology equipment used in our class so that we can better learn and practice science in a more advanced way. We would like to set up a classroom library for the 7th grade. We have books in the classroom but the bookshelves that store them are broken. When we go to take a book out, most books slide and it is hard to put them back. If we had a more durable book shelf like the one we picked out, the books would be able to stay on the shelf without the shelf falling apart. We researched the maximum weight capacity for each shelf and each shelf can hold 200 pounds.

After receiving the cases, we will set up the library and organize the books into categories. All encyclopedias and volume books will go into sections. We will also section the library according to the type of science. For example, life science, earth science and chemistry will each have their own sections. We will make a sign-out book so that we can make sure we keep track of borrowed books. We will visit each 7th grade class and explain to them how to use the library and how to sign-out and sign-in borrowed books.

By taking part in this project, it will solve the hardships and challenges we face with a lack of resources. The money donated will help us buy durable bookcases for science books so that we can expand our knowledge in science in a fun and professional way. The project is important to us because it takes our knowledge further so that we can be more prepared for high school, college, and future careers. We know that we will have to use a library in high school in college, so it's better to start practicing now.
