Every day my students start out learning math and reading. Since we are Title I, these are the subjects where we spend the majority of our day. When we get to our 45 minute science block, there is always a big cheer! I want to keep that cheer going by making science more hands-on!
My students attend a Title I school where 75% of them receive free or reduced lunch prices.
Most of their families don't have the funds to be able to buy them lunch, let alone exciting science supplies. I want to provide my students with science materials that will spark their interest to learn about magnets by connecting to something that is used in the real world: Magnetic Levitating Trains!
My Project
First, I will build a Magnetic Levitation Train track using the wooden planks, the plastic covers as a guide, and a magnetic strip down the middle. Next, my students will have the opportunity to design their own magnetic car that will float down the track. They will have to have learned about how magnets work before being successful with the explanation of why their train car works. This will be a real world application or how magnets are used as well as their final test in their magnet class.
This project will make a huge impact on my fifth grade students because it will show them how fun carriers in science can be!
They will learn about magnets through a memorable and fun experience and will remember this educational project for years to come.
