My Students

Our school is a Title I school where most of the students participate in a free or reduced-price lunch program. Many are academically at risk and come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Several struggle with absences and the desire to come to school. I want to help change that! I want kids to be excited about what they are learning and make connections with their lives outside of school.

Although, my students are faced with life's hardships, they have good hearts and inspire me!

My goal is to help students realize that science is not just something that happens at school, but it is all around them. I truly believe the best way to do that is through hands-on-learning.

My kids learn best through doing. When I mention there is a lab coming up, students get excited. I have heard the statement, "I wish we could do this more often" over and over from different students. I am always looking for ways to turn what they are learning into a hands-on-experience to make it relevant to their everyday lives and make new connections. This can, however, be a struggle when a department budget is nonexistent for over 300 students.

My Project

Sewing is so much more than just a hobby. With sewing machines, fabric scissors, and thread students will be able to design, create, and develop technical skills needed to accomplish mathematical, engineering, and scientific duties.

Sewing is a hands-on process that gives students the opportunity to create new things and solve problems which is what engineering is all about.

Students will learn the basics of operating a sewing machine, measure fabrics with accuracy, follow patterns, calculate seam allowances, cut materials with precision, create a three dimensional product from flat two dimensional objects, and experiment, test, and refine their product. Students will also be able to feel a great satisfaction from completing a project from the very beginning all the way through the end and will take pride in having ownership of something they created. With these materials we will focus on STEM education and hopefully inspire future engineers!

After the initial project, students will research, design, and create a product that would be beneficial to someone in the community as a way to give back.
