My Students

My 7th-grade students are a diverse group, representing a variety of socioeconomic levels, academic ability levels, nationalities, and more. We are a full-inclusion school, so I teach all students, including those with special needs, gifted, and English learners.

All of my students receive a rigorous STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and humanities education, along with a wide variety of engaging and relevant elective courses.

Following STEM principles, we have developed activity-based science courses in which students are guided through the topics while acquiring skills in experimentation, measuring, and lab techniques.

I believe science class should be fun, relevant, and engaging. I want students to love science so much that they choose to study it in high school and college.

My Project

I was inspired by an IF/THEN project called "If We Build Girls Up, Then We All Become STEMinists." It is so important that we foster creativity and confidence in our girls with STEM. I love the emphasis on showing both the girls and the boys in class that women can work in STEM careers and be successful. Connecting through art is an excellent way to help girls build confidence in their science explorations. I plan to use the video with Ana Maria Porras because I think my students will be inspired by her blending of science and art with crochet. I also look forward to using the "Crochet Cocci Friendship Bracelet" directions with my students as an extension of our microbe unit.

Integrating art into science experiences helps students make meaning of the fundamentals of science.

My students will use these supplies for science-inspired art projects. Students will create a cell using shrinking paper with Sharpies and will use math to compare sizes before and after baking. The resulting shrinky dink will make a lovely charm to remind them of parts of the cell, as well as main differences between plant and animal cells.

Students will use wire and beads to weave their own DNA strand. These creations can be used as keychains, necklaces or ornaments. We will then link our study of DNA to adaptation and will look at the color pattern of venomous coral snakes and the pattern of harmless mountain king snakes. Students will use ribbon and pony beads to create necklaces that show the color pattern of the different snakes and understand why mimicry is beneficial in nature. As we study inspirational females throughout the year, students will love exploring with dolls of Sally Ride, Frida Kahlo and a marine biologist.
