Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have come into high school behind grade level. But these students are not quitters. We have a strong culture of achievement, and encourage all students to prepare for and apply to college.

Were you to walk down the halls of my school, you might think you are in the United Nations.

We have students from five continents (and more than that number of islands) representing a diverse array of languages and cultures. My students are a mix of new immigrants and native born Americans. All of them want to succeed.

My Project

"The search for truth is more precious than its possession." Albert Einstein. I believe it is important that my students be able to search and discover as much as possible on their own. That is why I love teaching coding and electronics.

Electronics is unusually tangible to students, in that they can see immediately the results of their work -- the LED either lights up or doesnt; the speaker either makes a sound or doesn't.

Coding, similarly, allows students to command their electronic creation and get results almost immediately. There is such a short latency between command and result that the abstract concept of flowchart structure (loops, branches, local variables) can become concrete through the observed behavior of their components and program.

I am asking for materials to help me teach STEM topics of coding and electronics. I am asking for some Innovator Hubs and electronic components. We will program these units with the handheld TI calculators I already have. These resources will give my students a hands-on experience that will help STEM come to life.
