STEM in the Classroom Part 3

My students need a Labquest interface kit, 6 temperature probes and 3 pH sensors so that each group of 5 students have a set to experiment with, to learn about pH & heating curves.

My Students

Students need hands-on opportunities to learn about science and the world around them. With the Labquest 2 interface and probes, the students will be able to run labs to learn about heating curves, states of matter, phase changes and pH.

I have 180 awesome 8th grade students who are eager to learn Physics, Astronomy and Chemistry, how it relates to them and the world around them.

They are a very diverse group of young teenagers, with varied interests, backgrounds, ethnicity, aspirations, hopes and dreams. They are eager to learn and excited about the topics we have discussed so far. They are like sponges, soaking up new ideas with boundless curiosity and wonder. We have students of all levels, from advanced to far below basic in English/language arts and math. I want to make sure that they are ALL proficient in science by the end of the year, and your donation will help us move closer to our goal!

My Project

My students will be using the Labquest 2 kit and temperature probes to learn about phase changes, states of matter and heating curves. They will discover that all materials can be a solid, liquid or gas depending on the kinetic energy of the substance and what are the properties of each state of matter. They will learn about phase changes, why that is a physical change and not a chemical change, even though energy is added to or removed from the environment. With the pH probes, we will have a full set, so that students can accurately check the pH of various substances, and see how the pH changes as other substances are added.

It is really important to help our students become proficient with technology in the 21st century, and to pique their interest in STEM careers. We need to give our students the opportunities to collaborate and engage in critical thinking so they can be prepared for high school and beyond.
