My students need STEM materials. This kit from Lakeshore has hands-on activities and books that will allow my students to become excited about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am excited to welcome 56 fifth graders into my Title 1 Math and Science classroom this September. They are all unique and special, coming from different countries, cultures and speaking different languages. They bring these and their experiences together to form one classroom.
All of my students want to learn and succeed, they just need to have the tools to do so.
They deserve to have the dream classroom that meets their needs and supports them as they overcome the many challenges that face them.
My Project
Our first unit in 5th grade Science requires students to explore and learn about the central purpose of scientific inquiry. What better way to learn about science than to use it to solve problems, make observations, and identify patterns. The STEM bundle requested encourages students to solve real life problems by becoming engineers that use science and math skills in cooperative groups. The STEM bundle provides the opportunity to develop a way to filter water, make homes safe in earth quakes, create amusement park rides and alarms. The books requested will support and widen the learning experience.
Many of my students are unfamiliar with how we can use STEM skills outside the classroom.
Not only will these materials reinforce academic content, it will give them a possible goal or dream to work toward. There may be a future engineer, electrician, mechanic, or scientist in my class.
No matter what their future holds, this project will help them become critical thinkers identifying cause and effect relationships. This will transfer to other content areas.
