My students need a lot of love, care, and support from teachers. Our school is in a poverty-stricken area, where many students do not have the necessary supplies or tools they need to succeed. Building a warm, safe, inviting classroom community and environment is so important for my students.
My students are kind, caring, and ready to learn.
They are continuing to learn how to best communicate with friends and prevent bullying in our classroom. Classroom community is still something we are continuing to build throughout the year, not just in our class, but school-wide. We also strive to provide differentiated, culturally-responsive instruction and need more resources to do that.
My Project
I am new to first grade this year and want to make our learning as fun and engaging as possible, so I am requesting STEM kits for our classroom. In the next year, the NYS standards are changing to provide a more hands-on approach to learning for students, but our district is not planning to supply our classrooms with hands on materials. Having these STEM a building kits will help support student learning in small group time for both math and science, and create a fun way for students to problem solve. We could do and learn so much with these building kits!
With the engineering kit, students can pretend to be engineers, think critically, and write about their thought process.
All of these things are necessary for success in science, math and ELA.
With the building blocks kit, students can have a guide to help them build different structures. This will come in handy with our geometry unit and allow them practice with shapes we learn within the unit.
