My students need science supplies, including an illuminated orbiter, and Earth, moon, and sun kit, water cycle and food web kits, and a rollercoaster to explain energy!
Hands-on activities are vital to my students' really grasping a topic. We can read, watch videos, and have lots of discussion, but nothing seems to make as much of a difference as them experimenting with science kits!
My class is an extremely diverse group of 27 boys and girls with many different learning styles.
We have students who excel in every subject and students who struggle to meet standard. Our classroom supports each student's uniqueness and works together to achieve our goals. Our school is an award winning school with greater than 55% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. With great need, our staff has worked very hard to show that we can achieve great things, including being honored with the highest award given by the state of Washington over and over!
My Project
Science is a very important part of our daily learning. As a fifth grade teacher, I need to teach everything from ecosystems to the solar system. The model of the Earth, Moon, and the Sun will help my students learn the relationship between the three bodies and help explain rotation, revolutions, and the seasons. The roller coaster will help students distinguish between potential and kinetic energy. The food web cards and the water cycle activity will help students understand the complexity of the ecosystems and our weather.
Teaching students to be scientific thinkers is very important to our schools and to our society in general.
These materials will allow my students to explore and gain knowledge about the topics we cover in their 5th grade year. Your donation to this project will help my students be successful this year on the state test and in years to come, as they take science courses in high school and college!
