Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
While my students come from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds and neighborhoods, they have many similarities; the most significant is their desire to strive for excellence in everything they do. This characteristic is a building block for learning if we have the opportunity to develop it. One issue they all have in common is the lack of resources available in the community.
We are a Title I school where the majority of the students are English language learners and come from predominantly Spanish-speaking homes.
Many of our students are newcomers to the United States, and many have experienced trauma in their short lifetimes. They live in a community far from libraries or other educational resources within walking distance for our students. Despite the lack of access to outside areas, my students have been able to develop a love of learning and cooperation.
My Project
Our school garden was the hub of activity for students. When students talk about what they miss most at school it is their time in the garden. My students would go to the garden with their buddy first grade class and have a shared learning experience. This was a time of learning and building school community.
My project is designed to bring that experience into their homes with windowsill herb gardens.
We will continue to work with our first grade buddies since they will get a windowsill garden too. Students will be immersed in STEM lessons that will guide their understanding of the science of plants, use math skills to measure growth, and still nurture our relationships with or buddies.
Community is very important to our small school community. So many of our students have been with us since Kindergarten along with their brothers and sisters. My students have been very successful with distance learning, but they are getting lonely and really miss interacting with other students. This project will help them feel connected.
