This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school serves students PK-5 in a economically and racially diverse community here in San Antonio, TX. The teachers and staff here try and provide all the awesome experiences we know our students need in order to be successful in school.
We take it personal when we are unable to do everything we would like to help our students, but we never give up in making it happen.
Because of this dedication, our teachers and staff go out of their way to make sure the achievement gap does not widen for our students, but one that can be overcome.
My Project
Science, technology, engineering, and math is the future, and according to the U.S. Department of Education job opportunities in these sectors would increase by 14% from 2010-2020. Unfortunately, many high school students do not even consider these as careers, and will leave 3 million of these positions unfilled by 2018! Why is that? One reason is high school students lack proficiency in mathematics and science, causing them to shy away. How can this be changed?
By making STEM education a priority way before children reach high school, this trend can be reversed and my project is one way I hope to help foster that change!
Studies have identified the elementary years as the period when students form their interests in STEM identities and careers. These STEM kits will help me tap into the natural inquisitiveness and need to explore elementary students already have.
Through hands-on experiences, I can bring real-life situations into the classroom, getting my students engaged in questioning, problem solving, and collaborating with others in a way that is fun! This STEM bundle will help me provide the materials and curriculum necessary to foster a positive response to these subjects, and dispel student beliefs that these subjects are "difficult."
Your generous donation will help me build the better relationship that's needed between students and STEM fields and hopefully ignite the spark or stoke the flame that is already there for one of my students to want to pursue these areas further down the line.
