I am fortunate to teach 25 excitable 3rd graders! They are so full of adventure and curiosity! This is my first year teaching third grade, and it has been magical to watch them learn and grow.
Of my 25 students, over three-quarters of them qualify for free and reduced lunch, and less than half of my students live in a two-family household.
Several of my students struggle with basic math and reading skills. COVID-19 has impacted everyone, but it is evident that many of my students' families have worked excessively during this trying time.
Due to the pandemic, I have five students who have been home-schooled over the past few years. My class is adorable, but they also struggle with social skills and regulating emotions. When you add in learning gaps, helping students progress and grow this year has been quite a difficult task.
My Project
My students are curious and contemplative, passionate and playful, and yearn to explore and discover. I strive to capture these traits within my classroom and help my students build interest in their education. I want to give my kids exploratory blocks and STEM-based products that they can experiment with during class in hands-on explorations.
Not only do they LOVE hands-on explorations, but these explorations provide necessary experiences for students to learn about the world by asking relevant questions and rethinking strategies as they encounter both things that work and things that do not.
I have spent many hours researching items for my classroom, and I feel that these blocks, magnets, and investigative building materials are precisely what my students need.
So much of our school time is structured with clear right and wrong answers. However, real life is not always like that. Often, my kids are so scared to make mistakes that they struggle with starting projects. I am convinced that by allowing students structured explorations with a variety of engaging materials, they can increase their knowledge and their motivation to become lifelong learners.
