Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a design thinking school located in the heart of the greater San Diego metro area and our students come from all over the city to learn in our expanding urban neighborhood.
This year, the 3rd grade class is working on a student-run business.
I am wowed by the energy and creativity of this group of students! Our interdisciplinary project weaves in math, science, literacy, social studies, and socio-emotional development as students collaborate to start their own business. Through the course of our project, we have learned the basics from writing a mission statement, conducting market research, prototyping a product and design, and launching a marketing campaign. Our company RLX is now selling bath products such as soap and bath bombs that are made from all natural ingredients with a zero-waste philosophy. We are excited to bring our product out to markets in the community so that we can raise money for our classroom supplies, our school, and an organization of our choice: Project SWELL.
My Project
STEM resources will greatly strengthen the effectiveness of this project. My students will use these materials to access their math, science, and literacy curriculum in new ways.
The iPad will be used in our classroom daily to support differentiation in our project and through skill-building during reading, math, and writing workshops.
Our business is divided into departments and we have a Marketing and Social Media Team that will use the iPad to promote our business, a Research and Development team who will use it for product research, and an Accounting and Sales Team who will use the iPad for keeping track of our sales.
Additionally, the books will help us reinforce the learning we do in the classroom and give students access to new ideas and opportunities to think about how math and science are related to entrepreneurship.
Donations to this project will help to improve my students' learning in authentic, meaningful ways.
