This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A large portion of my students have been negatively impacted by Hurricane Harvey. As our community continues to rebuild, I want to do my best to ensure that my students aren't left behind. Our elementary school is home to a diverse population of students. I love that most students have gone through at least 5 years of the Leader in Me program. Due to STAAR testing and district benchmarks, it is a harsh reality that science isn't prioritized in the lower primary grades. However, I do my best to nurture my students' genuine enthusiasm for STEM and a love of hands-on scientific inquiry when they finally get to fifth grade.
I feel blessed whenever I get to witness my students' faces light up as they make connections in their minds and are finally able to give a name to some of the experiences they have had with the natural world as a result of our labs and projects!
My Project
My students need to keep up with all the changes that are taking place in a increasingly tech-centric society. There is a growing wave to move to Project Based Learning in science; however, that requires giving students time to organically conduct research. Unfortunately, technology is limited at my campus. Most of it is allocated to a computer lab that only allows for 1 day a week scheduled for the entire grade level and two iPad carts that are shared with the rest of the campus. By having more technology in the classroom, my hope is that many of the project based learning lessons that I want to implement will finally be possible.
Not only can these Chromebooks be used by students to conduct research and present their findings, they can also be used to practice coding.
My hope is to use these laptops to help students with their academics and also inspire creativity by allowing students to practice coding in the classroom. I would love to have a once a week coding day or even start an afterschool program. Ever since I started teaching 4 years ago, I've wanted to start an afterschool coding program where students can use Scratch and Google CS. This small project would be a wonderful first step in setting that goal in motion.
