Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach in a predominantly Hispanic/Latino community. The students I work with are extremely intelligent, and I strongly believe that when they are given opportunities outside of a traditional classroom, they flourish like no other. My students all have their own unique skillset that make each and every one of them a crucial part of our team. I have problem-solvers who are great with math and science, students with artistic and creative ability, hands-on learners and natural leaders. Despite the lack of resources and pretty much every odd against them, my students prevail, and they never fail to amaze me with their brilliant minds. They deserve spaces that reflect their potential and brilliance.

Building the outdoor classroom from the start will give my students something they can all be proud of, and something that students will be able to use and learn with for years to come.

The raised garden beds will hold a plethora of learning opportunities: soil quality, urban gardening, pollinators, life cycle of a plant, sustainability--the list goes on. Not only will they be learning outside of a traditional classroom setting, but they will be able to harvest the vegetables, herbs, and flowers that they grow! The seating and storage furniture will give us a place to gather and reflect, journal, and store our gardening tools and other learning materials. These items will transform a green space into a collaborative learning environment that will serve hundreds of students each school year.

My goal for this project is to encourage teamwork, responsibility, and pride through the creation of an outdoor learning space. What makes my students special is not just how smart they are, but how much they care. I am confident that they will make this outdoor learning space into something truly magical.
