My students need STEM materials such as Keva planks for building structures, strategy thinking games for developing logic and thinking skills, and STEM games like Suspend and Blokus to work on collaboration skills.

My Students
My students thrive on challenges. As I strive to integrate more and more 21st Century Skills including collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and creativity; my students need hands on materials that support STEM learning challenges. My students need hands-on STEM materials that allow them to apply their critical thinking skills in innovative ways. They need to design, build, test, revise, and present their projects.
My students learn best when they work collaboratively with one another and tackle a task that requires them to use their ingenuity.
My third graders are a truly amazing group of learners who work together well, enjoy challenges, love to learn, and learn best by activities that are not just paper and pencil tasks. The school has approximately 415 students in a suburban area with a percentage of students who travel to the school from an inner city area which makes a culturally diverse population of learners. They need to see connections in their learning to the real world. They also need to be active to learn and have opportunities to include their own voice in their learning. They are a fun group to teach, and I love them to pieces!
My Project
These STEM materials will be used daily in my classroom to develop critical thinking skills. My students will use all of the logic puzzles such as Suspend, Set, and Blokus to solve a variety of puzzles. They will collaborate with one another and draw upon each others' strengths to solve the challenges. The challenges are leveled, to allow for success for all and extended thinking.
Using a variety of hands-on STEM materials engages every child to learn to his or her highest potential in a way that is both fun and challenging.
The building materials Keva blocks will be used by my students to design and create structures that meet design criteria. Through exploration, my students will discover they have the skills and knowledge to succeed at challenging tasks.
It's exciting to think about how different my classroom will be once we have these STEM materials, in a good way! Students will be excited to learn, engaged in lessons, and active. No longer will our days be spent only using the materials of paper, books, and pencils. Today's learners deserve to be challenged and excited in the classroom. They need to learn how to persevere through challenges.
