This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have an amazing group of students that come from all walks of life. They are energetic, funny and ready to learn! I teach 26 superstars in a Title I school in New York City.

My students come from countries like Colombia, Mexico, Bangladesh, and Guyana.

I teach students with disabilities, students that have health impairments, and a large population of English language learners. This year is unlike any other because my boys outnumber the girls. With all of their differences, one thing stands true: my students are eager to learn.

My Project

I have been coding with my students for about two years now. I have been attending professional developments around STEM and coding; before the last chancellor retired her push was for girls to code because they didn’t necessarily find an interest in coding. I have looped with my students and have had an impact in my female students lives. I have exposed them to basic coding, LEGO robotics and Sphero.

I have requested 2 iPads, 2 Spheros, coding books and 3Ddoodlers.

With the iPads we will be able to control the Sphero robot ball by coding or programming them using computational thinking, trial and error and fun. The iPads will be used for Scratch coding, to operate our LEGO WeDo kits as well as Codemonkey. With the coding books readily available for each female student, we can analyze them in a small group. Each girl will have their own copy so they can move at their own pace. The 3Ddoodler will make their thinking come to life by making protypes, or obstacles for our Sphero. The possibilities are endless. My vision is to break the mold and give these little innovators the confidence, enthusiasm and inspiration to be programmers. In a male dominated field I want the girls in my class to design games, to think outside of the box and become engineers in their own right. Please be the change for a little girl today. Thank you for your support!
