This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Teaching in a low-income/high-poverty school/community, I see how my students are faced with daily challenges. These challenges include poverty, poor health, and parents who may be unable to afford resources such as books, computers, or even family weekend activities that would create a positive learning experience for them.
My students love to explore, create, and learn.
I teach a first grade class formed by 11 girls and 10 boys whose parents may not have the financial resources or time available to provide them with the skills and material needed to prepare them for the careers of the future.
My Project
Creativity in class structure promotes innovative thinking. I want to provide my students with opportunities for authentic growth and development. One way of doing this is through STEM and Art activities. We now know that children with a strong foundation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics will go on to play an integral role in our nation’s global competitiveness. I want my students to become tomorrow’s movers and shakers.
My first graders have the gift for exploration and experimentation already.
STEM challenges like Spider Web: Engineering Challenge, Ant Strength Challenge, and Build a Bug Challenge will be done in class prior to the Kidspace Museum Trip to start the exploration and investigation process.
During the trip to Kidspace Museum, my first graders will continue their exploration, and make careful observations and use critical thinking to identify the key traits of many insects and arachnids. As they make their observations, my first graders will make drawings of their observations and take them back to the classroom, and as a final project design what they would consider the perfect insect or arachnid.
