My students need Straw Rocket Launchers that will allow them to create projects they can test while utilizing science, technology, engineering, and math.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am honored to work with a wonderful group of gifted students who thrive on innovative and challenging projects. I want them to leave my classroom armed with 21st century skills and the ability to think creatively, work collaboratively, be cooperative, and communicate well.
Our school is located minutes from Disneyland, the happiest place on Earth; however, with over 35 identified gangs in the area and students living well below the poverty line, our focus in class is preparation for a better future.
My class is a group of bright and talented students who enjoy being challenged. They are eager to take on new and exciting methods of learning. They are quick learners who teach me something everyday.
My Project
We will integrate science, technology, engineering, and math to construct rockets out of straws and other materials. Students will collaborate in teams to discuss design, critically thinking about balance and projection angles. Groups will build their rockets and test them using the Straw Rocket Launchers. In addition to learning about balance and angles, they will learn about the amount of pressure it requires to complete a successful launch that meets the group's launch criteria. After testing, groups may have to modify their designs, which is teaching my students to persevere. In addition to the multiple subject disciplines, they will be collaborating, communicating, using critical thinking, and will have the wonderful opportunity to show their incredible creativity while doing it.
Projects such as this provide students with a hands on experience, which allows them to learn many concepts while having fun and being creative.
Science, technology, engineering, and math is the way of future. STEM careers are in high demand; however, the National Math and Science Initiative states that students are not prepared when they exit high school. Hands on projects are the "hook" my students need to keep them excited about subject matter they must have to compete in life.
