Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school has students from Pre-K through 6th grade. Approximately 70% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. We also have a high English Language Learner population. Many of our students come from immigrant families and speak a second language at home. My students come from hardworking families, often with parents working multiple jobs to make ends meet.

I would love to provide my students with the skills they require to be financially literate from an early age, so they understand how to better plan for their future, while developing 21st century skills.

I have been running after-school STEM Clubs at my school for the past three years. I would like to provide my students with a more streamlined experience, exposing them to up to date research in the 21st century STEM skills required, to compete for the best jobs. To accomplish this, I need to advance my own learning and gain relevant professional development.

My Project

In the past three years, I have engaged students at my school (kinder through sixth grade) in a variety of after-school STEM Clubs. Each of these endeavors has been as much of a learning experience for me, as it has been for my students. I would like to include critical thinking skills and financial literacy to the options I offer.

I want to dedicate some time in 2019 to hone my own skills and become a master teacher of STEM teaching and learning at our school.

By learning the 15 principles of STEM Teaching through The National Institute for STEM Education (NISE) and completing the National Certificate for STEM Teaching, I can better lead my students through programs involving problem-solving, financial literacy, and critical thinking.

This certification will also help me create a better learning environment, build scientific understanding, and engage students in science and engineering practices.

Learning how to provide students with the above skills, coupled with financial literacy skills, will help my students be better equipped to make good academic choices and choose efficient career paths, as they enter middle school.
