Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach in a Title 1 school. I am an Early Childhood Special Education teacher. All of my students have special needs. Blocks are a great way to introduce them to STEM. STEM is so important for everyone's learning and I want to give my students all of the advantages possible.
Research shows that playing with blocks is beneficial for all students.
According to Patricia Kempthorne (Creator of Blockfest):
"Playing with blocks provides the opportunity for children to learn elements of science and math, like problem-solving, counting, adding and subtracting, and helps them build both gross and fine motor skills. Block play also supports other key aspects of development, including language learning as children talk about the structures they built with the adults and children around them, creativity, imagination, self-esteem, and social and emotional growth. Block play provides a natural context for exploring the physical world. Like little scientists, children experiment with structures and observe the outcomes of their building efforts. Through this process, they learn about mass, weight, proportionality, and balance, and can use their new concepts to plan and predict outcomes."
