In our second-grade classroom, we incorporate STEM bins into our daily rotations. These bins provide an engaging way for students to take brain breaks while also exploring their creativity. Each day, different bins will be rotated through the class, allowing all students to experience a variety of materials and activities.
The purpose of the STEM bins is to encourage students to use their imagination and build various structures.
With materials like Lincoln Logs, magnetic tiles, and magnetic blocks, students can create anything they can think of. This hands-on approach not only makes learning fun but also supports their problem-solving skills.
After building with the STEM materials, students will have the opportunity to reflect on their creations in their writing journals. They will describe what they have built, share their ideas, and explain their thought processes. This writing component reinforces their learning and helps develop their communication skills.
As a second-grade teacher, it is important for me to provide my students with educational breaks throughout the day. The STEM bins offer a perfect opportunity for students to engage in productive play while also learning. This balance of work and play is essential for their development and well-being.
