This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the future of the nation in my classroom. However my students are a little extra special. My students are charismatic, optimistic, hard-working, and over-achievers. They are over-achievers not because they get As or 100s on every test, but because every day they walk in to my classroom and try THEIR best, no matter what is happening at home or in their community. They come into class everyday and put their daily trauma aside to make a better life for themselves.
In my classroom, I have future teachers, police officers, chefs, and presidents but that’s not enough.
I want to expose them to the millions of jobs that they may not see in their communities, like engineers, architects, and video game coders. I want them to have the skills and knowledge necessary to create their OWN jobs. I want them to learn that not even the sky is the limit. They can become whatever they want to be even if it is not yet created.
My Project
Researchers say, that the jobs my students will be applying for and working in have are not even created yet. This means that in order to prepare them for the future I as their teacher need to provide them with opportunities to foster their creativity and learn how to problem solve.
I hope to do this through STEM Bins; an activity that allows students to use their creativity to build structures with materials such as Legos, snowflakes, Playdoh with toothpicks, and so much more.
With STEM Bins students can decide to either complete tasks that are on cards or use their imagination to create something new. These bins will build their imagination, problem solving, and critical thinking skills all through play.
